A production based on a love for wild water swimming and the benefits it offers the human body, mind, and soul. This piece explores and documents the motivation behind women who wild swim and the elation they gain from it.

A sense of community and camaraderie is gathered on these outdoor swim meets, fellow nature lovers come together to share moments of initial trepidation and excitement – which flows into experiences of calm and togetherness. Where troubles are forgotten or shared, the body can be rejuvenated, and the mind can be mentally reset.

This project was produced over a four-month period in the Winter/Spring period of 2022 – when temperatures were low, and swimmers were well prepared to welcome the waters’ healing properties.

The aim with this project was to encapsulate samples of women displaying “togetherness”, through the art of Photography.  Opening the viewers eyes to potential ways of connecting with others, by using an activity as a means of relaxation and body restoration.

The healing properties of cold water swimming

The face of determination and strength! Jayne suffered a stroke only seven weeks prior to these images being taken!

Her first time wild swimming was emotional and Jayne felt the positive physical effects almost immediately. She had no pain during her swim and for a few hours after.

Once out on the loch, something quite special happened!   Pippin, her 9 year old dog (who has never liked water) decided to jump in and paddle towards her.  The strength and support Jayne felt from this single act, provided comfort and encouragement to carry on her journey to improve her body and mind.

A true testament of how beneficial wild swimming can be for our physical health.
